An examination of collaborative document editing tools used in various academic settings, including libraries, instruction, and off-site hosted solutions.

This session will include hands-on instruction on how to create wiki web pages.

Structure of session:

  1. Provide real examples of collaborative publishing
  2. Review of the Literature
  3. Hands-on wiki page creation

Collaborative (Read/Write) Publishing Examples

We will quickly cover the landscape of what's happening in the world of collaborative document editing.

Wikis in Libraries

Hosted Wikis (off-site)

  • PBwiki - Peanut Butter Wiki - free and pay models. Nice templates for courses and syllabi.
  • JotSpot (now google) - recently acquired by google and new accounts currently closed. Possibly will resurface as part of google's office suite. Existing accounts still work.

Web-based Word Processing

(possible solutions to lack of productivity software on the public computers)

Semantic wikis

  • "A semantic wiki is a wiki that has an underlying model of the knowledge described in its pages.(more...)
  • dabbleDB

Other collaborative tools for students

On Site Wikis - Hosted On Organizational Servers

  • Show wikimatrix or wikipedia comparison site (100s of wikis) - open source v. pay enterprise
  • PmWki - what we have in the library
  • Collaborative Media -> IS&T - what they are up to
